Highland Wins 2007 Community Sustainability Award
In September 2007, Highland was recognized by Food Front Cooperative Grocery in Portland, Oregon, for our use of petroleum-free bottles.

According to the State of Oregon's website: "Sustainable development embodies the basic principle that a strong economy, a healthy environment and thriving local communities are mutually dependent. One cannot be sustained without the others. The department has adopted a Sustainability Plan as part of the agency's overall strategy the foundation for its policies, programs and practices.
The Innovation and Economic Strategies Division supports this strategy and recognizes sustainability as a driver of advanced technologies, services and applications that can promote economic development throughout the state and enhance the quality of life of all Oregonians." This year, Highland Laboratories received an Honorable Mention Sustainability Award from the State of Oregon for its environmentally-sensitive business practices. Highland Laboratories continues to receive praise for its use of Earth-Friendly packaging. On page 4 in the April 2007 issue of Nutrition Industry Executive:
...Mt. Angel, OR-based Highland Laboratories wasted no time in leading efforts to revolutionize its bottles. In June 2006, the company said it was the first company in the US to "begin packaging its supplements in Earth-Friendly, corn-based bottles which use 68 percent less fossil fuel than that required for petroleum-based plastics." In June [2006], Highland said it was the first company in the U.S. to begin packaging its supplements in Earth-friendly, corn-based bottles which use 68% less fossil fuel than petroleum-based plastics. "Highland stands firm in the knowledge that it makes sense for those providing organic and wholesome nutrition-including dietary supplements-to complete the cycle with Earth-friendly packaging," stated the nomination. (2006 Nutrition Business Journal Business Achievement Awards) | Highland Laboratories Receives Honorable Mention in 2006 Environmental Business Journal's Business Achievement Awards [To] Highland Laboratories for introducing Earth Friendly vitamin bottles to U.S. market, an accomplishment that the company claims as an industry first. Highland Laboratories has been serving the natural products industry exclusively for over 33 years. It is a maker of a dietary supplements with a history of environmentally sensitive business practices, and in June of this year [2006] announced that it would begin packaging their supplements in Earth-friendly, corn-based bottles. The bottles use 68% less fossil fuel than petroleum-based plastics. The new biodegradable bottles are a first step in changing how we use our precious and diminishing resources. As part of its commitment to marketing and supplying nutritional products, including dietary supplements, in Earth-friendly packaging, Highland Laboratories pioneered the use of recycled paper and soy ink in its sales literature and catalogs more than a decade ago and today uses recycled paper and soy ink for its product labels. Highland Laboratories holds an Oregon Board of Pharmacy license as a Class 1 pharmaceutical manufacturer with a GMP "A" rating from the Natural Products Association (formerly the National Nutritional Foods Association).
